Have you ever been somewhere that powerfully moved you, yet left you without the words to describe it? Writers of all stripes are invited to an afternoon workshop titled "Conjuring A Sense of Place: A Creative Writing Workshop" which will be led by Sheryl St. Germain, artist-in-residence at A Studio in the Woods.

The purpose of the workshop is to explore the use of poetry and creative writing to capture that elusive quality that defines a special space. St. Germain, a New Orleans native, is a widely published author of poetry, essays and creative non-fiction and has won numerous prestigious awards such as two NEA Fellowships, an NEH Fellowship, the Dobie-Paisano Fellowship and the William Faulkner award for a personal essay.

She is associate professor of English at Iowa State University, where she teaches both poetry and creative non-fiction writing. A Studio in the Woods, located in Lower Coast Algiers, is a program of Tulane University dedicated to preserving the bottomland hardwood forest and providing within it a peaceful retreat where visual, literary and performing artists can work uninterrupted.

The only live-in artists' retreat of its kind in the Deep South, A Studio in the Woods fosters both environmental preservation and the creative work of artists of all ages.
