National Book Award winner Ellen Gilchrist will celebrate her 70th birthday by offering a free public reading on Feb. 20 at 4 p.m. in McAlister Auditorium at Tulane University. Gilchrist, Zale Writer-in-Residence at Newcomb College, has written over twenty books including her award-winning short story collection Victory Over Japan.
Much of her fiction is set in or references New Orleans, and engages the gender, racial, class, and social conundrums that characterize the city. She is an associate professor of English in the Creative Writing Programs at the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville. Her latest work is The Writing Life, a collection of short essays due from the University Press of Mississippi in March 2005.
Each year since 1986, the Zale Writer-in-Residence Program has brought to the Tulane campus a renowned woman writer to spend a week among students.
