Cynthia Lowenthal, the associate professor of English who has served as interim dean of Newcomb College for the past year, has been appointed permanent dean.
"Lester (Provost Lefton) sent out the letter on Tuesday and I walked across campus on Tuesday afternoon and accepted," says Lowenthal, with a smile.
She expects the next five years to be both busy and productive ones. "I will dedicate myself to making Newcomb central to the intellectual development and academic success of students," she says. Lowenthal hopes to use Newcomb resources such as the art gallery, center for research on women, and children's center to enrich the academic experiences of students and support the pedagogical ideas of faculty.
Also, she hopes to further connect the experiences of science students to those of students in the liberal arts. Lowenthal had been associate dean for the Faculty of the Liberal Arts and Sciences before taking the interim dean's position in December 2000 (see related article in the Sept. 15, 2001, issue of Inside Tulane).
