Staff evaluations moved up

The timetable for the staff performance evaluation process has been moved to take place during the remaining weeks of this year. The deadline for all supervisors to turn in evaluations is Dec. 29, 2000. The move marks a trend by the administration to better integrate the evaluation process into the budget preparation for the coming fiscal year.

According to Yvette Jones, senior vice president for planning and administration, the primary reason for the change is to allow for evaluations to be used in determining merit-based raises for staff. All salary changes must be reflected in the budget, which is presented to the Tulane Board for approval in May. An earlier deadline for the evaluation process gives the administration more breathing room in drafting budget assumptions for the coming year.

Last year we moved the evaluation period from March to January, she said. We were scrambling in the months of February and March to make recommendations for the merit pool money. Using staff evaluations as a tool for distributing merit-based raises supports the university's strategic plan, says Jones.

If you want to talk about rewarding outstanding performance, then you have to have an effective tool that can objectively determine whether someone deserves a merit raise, she said. Although, at press time, the administration was still discussing the size of the salary pool for next year and the method for distributing merit increases, Jones said that all department heads will be encouraged to distribute salary increases to staff based on a combination of high-level performance and market equity.

In another change, department heads will now be held accountable for the timely submission of their employees evaluations. Supervisors who do not comply with the deadline for evaluations may be subject to not getting their salary raises, said Jones. Noting that December is a tough time to deal with extra projects, Jones said she would ideally like to move the deadline for future evaluations up further still. This is an incremental move, she said. I would love to have the evaluation process finished by November.
