Finney fits the mold

The Shawn Finney era in Green Wave men's basketball has begun. Tulane's new head coach is on the recruiting road for the best and brightest student-athletes "that fit the Tulane image and mold." What can the academic community expect from Finney?

"They will see a coach who cares about these young men, on and off the court. We will do everything in our power to be sure they do the right things in the classroom."

On the court, expect to see an up-tempo style of play, with plenty of three-point shots and players who attack the ball on offense and defense.

"I know what it takes to win a national championship," said Finney, former assistant coach at the University of Kentucky, who was named July 19 to replace Perry Clark.

Finney has 15 years of coaching experience, from Division 3 colleges to larger programs at Tulsa, Georgia and Kentucky. The press conference was aired live on the university's Web site as Tulane's first test "webcast."

Athletic director Rick Dickson was impressed with how Finney worked his way through the coaching ranks - what Dickson called "the depth of his journey." Dickson also kept Tulane's academic mission at the forefront in his coaching search: "I focused on people who believe in education." And Finney fits that mold. "I know he's a good person," Dickson said.
