With newly renovated digs and a revamped menu, the Bruff Commons eatery offers faculty and staff members another option for uptown campus dining. In its spacious second-floor setting in the Bruff Commons building on McAlister Drive, the uptown campus main dining hall reopened last month after a summer of renovations.
The new hall includes a grill area, a hot-food line, a salad bar, an international-food line that doubles as an omelet bar at breakfast, an area for specialty vegetable and fruit salads, a deli line and a Sbarro Italian Eatery outlet. Sodexho-Marriott, the company that runs all uptown campus dining areas except the PJ's Coffee and Tea and Rue de la Course coffee shops, has also expanded the number of beverage areas from two to five.
Not only have the food offerings changed, says Lucy Wright, regional manager for Sodexho-Marriott, but virtually all equipment and decorating items in the dining area and the kitchen are new, too.
"It's fun bringing something new to the students," Wright says. Colorful Fiestaware replaced the former bland, white plates, she says.
Yellow and gold tiles line one wall of the dining room, which also features new tables and chairs. New refrigerators, fryers and ovens in the kitchen round out the renovations. Faculty and staff members can pay "all-you-can-eat" prices for each meal.
Breakfast (7-10:30 a.m.) is $5; lunch (11 a.m.-4 p.m.) is $6; and dinner (4-8 p.m.) is $7. Bruff also established a new late-night dinner from 10:30 p.m. through midnight to cater to students. Sodexho-Marriott also sells a prepaid card that allows diners to enter during lunchtime for $5.50. The card sells in packages for 25 and 50 meals. Call 865-5294 for more information.
Wright says the renovated Bruff Commons dining hall and revamped University Center food court came after a yearlong survey of students. One of the survey's findings was that students wanted more international food options. Sodexho-Marriott installed Ming's, a new Asian-food area in the University Center, and the international line in Bruff as a result.
More changes are on tap for other dining areas on the uptown campus over the next three years, Wright says. Sodexho-Marriott plans to renovate the Rathskeller space in the University Center next year. The UC's faculty dining room is also slated for a facelift in the next few years.
Says Wright, "There is a distinct need for something on the front part of campus. We're in the process of looking for more space."
