Tulane faculty, staff and students can download a free virus protection software program through Technology and Infrastructure Services (TIS), formerly Tulane Computing Services. The program, McAfee VirusScan, runs on both Windows and Macintosh operating systems and is available for computers on campus and at home, says Adam Krob, assistant director of customer support at TIS.
"It's important for everybody to have virus scanning software," Krob says. "With as much work as we all do on the Internet, uploading and downloading files, [this software] just gives us an extra level of comfort."
A particularly useful feature of the program, says Krob, is the automatic monthly updating of the program that allows it to recognize new viruses. The automatic updating is available for Windows 95 and Windows NT. Macintosh users must download new virus recognition files from the TIS software web site every month.
The VirusScan manufacturer estimates that about 100 new viruses emerge each month. Members of the Tulane community can download the program from the TIS software-licensing site on the Internet at http://www.tulane. edu/~tcsdoc/academic/desktop/softwarelicense.html.
