In an effort to avoid travel agency service fees, the university has contracted a new company to manage the Tulane Travel Connection located in the University Center. Distribution Management Inc., a local family-owned business serving as a full-service travel agency since 1989, is handling travel arrangements on campus.
"DMI has a long, successful history of travel management and a close relationship with Tulane," says William F. Canning, associate vice president of auxiliary services.
The travel business has changed dramatically in the past 10 months. Airlines have significantly reduced or capped commissions paid to travel agents while increasing the price for some domestic flights. Ticketless travel is becoming more commonplace and the use of Internet booking is dramatically increasing.
To that end, many local and national travel agencies have instituted service fees for transactions. Under the contract terms with DMI there will be no fees charged to Tulane customers except for minimal fees for handwritten documents.
A $10 fee will be collected for such handwritten documents as cash payments for Southwest Airlines tickets, all handwritten prepays and miscellaneous charge orders, and for any exchanges, refunds or discount coupons. A $25 fee will be accessed for tour and cruise bookings, but will be applied to the final payment. Bobbe Petreikis, general manager for the DMI travel agency division, says she will be calling on all Tulane departments herself to talk about travel needs.
DMI has two other locations in addition to the one at Tulane. DMI Vacations in Metairie handles leisure travel, while the corporate office on South Peters Street handles hospitality arrangements for the Crescent Citys large tourist-drawing events such as Jazz & Heritage Festival and Mardi Gras. The agency also handles travel arrangements for local professional sports teams. The company operates New Orleans Tours, the Airport Shuttle, New Orleans Paddlewheels and Queen and Crescent Hotel under the umbrella name of Hospitality Enterprises.
"We are extremely excited to be associated with Tulane," Petreikis says. "It is just an offshoot of the service we provide. We are a family-owned business that is home-based in New Orleans. We can assist faculty, staff, students and their families with any of their travel needs."
