New Orleans businessman John Koerner has been elected chairman of the Tulane University Board of Administrators. Koerner, president of Koerner Capital Corp., a private investment business, and former president and co-owner of Barq's Inc., will begin a five-year term as chair in September.

Chosen at the May 21 meeting of the board, Koerner succeeds John Giffen Weinmann, who has chaired the board since 1994. Koerner, 55, was elected to the board in 1994. He holds undergraduate, law and master of business administration degrees from Tulane.

In 1976, Koerner made a name for himself as a maverick in the business community when he and a partner bought out the privately held Barq's Inc. Through an innovative marketing strategy that included a series of off-beat promotions, Koerner and his partner built Barq's into the No. 2 root beer bottler in the country. They sold the company to Coca-Cola USA in March 1995.

A former chairman of The Chamber/New Orleans and the River Region as well as member of MetroVision and the World Trade Center of New Orleans, Koerer also serves on the boards of Trinity Episcopal School, Legg Mason, Guiltless Gourmet Inc. and Luminex Corp.

In 1992, Junior Achievement inducted him into its Business Hall of Fame and, in 1994, Beverage Industry Magazine honored Koerner with its prestigious Executive of the Year award. Koerner, an avid sportsman who enjoys water skiing, wind sailing, scuba diving, fishing and hunting, is married to the former Ann Souchon Parker. They have two sons, John Edward IV and Parker Earl.
