The annual holiday toy drive led by the Tulane University Staff Advisory Council has put smiles on the faces of local foster children since 2008. This year, the SAC has more than tripled its collection of toys and financial donations benefiting Court Appointed Special Advocates for Children.
“We do this for the children from our hearts,” says Zina Eugene, an uptown campus representative for SAC. “We were all excited by this year’s outpouring. It was extraordinary.”
Last year, the Tulane community donated 300 gifts and $1,500. This year, the Tulane community donated 550 gifts and $5,150 in cash.
The donation to CASA is made possible by contributions from Tulane faculty and staff members. About 600 faculty and staff members contributed this holiday season.
Eugene says the toys and cash will provide gifts for 730 children in Orleans, Jefferson and St. Tammany parishes.
Joy Bruce, executive director of CASA New Orleans says that many of the children to whom they provide help have previously been abused and neglected. Some have never received Christmas presents. Of the annual drive, Bruce says, “We are overwhelmed by the generosity of the Tulane family.”
The CASA organization functions on a national, state and local level to recruit, train and support volunteers in their work with abused children.
