Prayer flags

Suspended beneath an oak tree on the Tulane uptown campus, strings of Tibetan prayer flags set the tone for a press conference to announce the visit of the Dalai Lama to New Orleans, as well as his appearance at Tulane's commencement ceremony on May 18, 2013.

Ron Marks

Ron Marks, dean of social work, announces that the Dalai Lama will receive an honorary doctorate of humane letters and deliver the keynote address to graduates at the university's commencement ceremony. The Dalai Lama's Tulane address will coincide with his visit to New Orleans to participate in a conference sponsored by the Tulane School of Social Work. According to Marks, the Daliai Lama's visit to New Orleans is a direct result of relationships he and the school have formed during 12 years of working with the Tibetan exile community in Dharamsala, India.

School of Social Work building

Members of the Tulane community gather in front of the School of Social Work building to await the press conference on Monday (Nov. 19).
