The conference will include presentations by William Gale, co-director of the Tax Policy Center, Brookings Institution; Paul Stebbins, executive chair of the World Fuel Services Corp.; and Todd McCracken, president of the National Small Business Association. Steven Sheffrin, executive director of the Murphy Institute and economics professor at Tulane, will moderate the panel.

“Our panel will focus on the instability in our budget and economic future created by our long run debt problem, and what realistic strategies are available to enable our political system to be able to handle this challenge,” Sheffrin says.

“The current controversy over the debt ceiling and the government shutdown just illustrate how sensitive and vexing these issues are and the anxieties our country has in confronting them.  The fights occurring now about the sequester, entitlements (especially health care), and taxation are just a taste of what the US faces in the long run.”

The Murphy Institute seeks to educate students and the general public in the understanding and analysis of the most challenging economic, moral and political problems; to support and advance applied research in public policy, public affairs and civic engagement; and to inspire advancement in human prosperity and well-being. Each academic year, the Murphy Institute organizes and sponsors a variety of events, ranging from lectures open to the general public to smaller scale scholarly conferences and seminars.
