For Tulane University undergraduates hungry to make a difference, the Give Back Grants offer a way to fund original or existing public service projects.

Every year, Tulane students create meaningful service projects that support communities in New Orleans and around the world, says Katie Houck, assistant director of outreach and leadership development at the Tulane Center for Public Service.

“The Give Back Grants are a great way to support their efforts,” says Houck.

To receive funding, Tulane students must submit an application by Oct. 9. Individual students, groups of students and student organizations with service projects or ideas are encouraged to apply. Four student-generated projects will be granted awards ranging from $250 to $2,000, made possible by a gift from two Tulane alumni and parents.

“Funding from USG (Undergraduate Student Government) can be very strict, so the Give Back Grants introduce an alternative way to fund projects that get students to collaborate with the community and learn new skills,” says Samantha Gould, chair of the Community Action Council of Tulane University Students (CACTUS).

Once four projects are selected, the finalists will pitch their ideas to an audience of their peers. After listening to each group's pitches and plans for the grant money, Tulane students will vote for their favorite project. All four projects will receive a grant, but the project with the most votes will receive the maximum prize.

“Tulane students love the idea of getting involved,” says Gould. “This is a fun way to get your friends on board and also get behind something you care about.”
