A new era of Tulane athletics begins on Saturday (Oct. 8) when the Green Wave bowling team — the 15th and newest sport — takes to the lanes for the first time, hosting Southern University–Baton Rouge in a dual match at Rock 'n' Bowl.
Festivities will begin at 9:30 a.m., and admission is free. A special ceremony will include speeches by Rick Dickson, director of athletics, and Hayley Beavis, head coach for the women’s bowling team. The bowlers will take to the lanes around 10 a.m. at Rock 'n' Bowl, 3016 S. Carrollton Ave., New Orleans.
“We are really excited to start this season,” Beavis says. “The girls have been working extremely hard and are ready for this weekend and the rest of the season.” Watch a video interview with Beavis posted on the athletics website.
Tulane fields a roster of eight bowlers that includes senior Jessica Cwik, juniors Sarah Knapp, Regina Popova, Hillary Sullivan and Heather Fraser, sophomore Caryn Wong, and first-year student-athletes Victoria Wiseman and Kelsie Kelly.
“This is new for everyone,” Beavis says. “It’s new for Rock 'n' Bowl, new for Tulane and new for the girls. We are going to have some fun and enjoy the experience.”
Tulane becomes the 34th Division I school to sponsor women’s bowling, including in-state schools Louisiana Tech as well as Southern and Grambling State universities. Other notable schools competing in Division I include the University of Nebraska, Vanderbilt University and Arkansas State University.
Tulane returns to the lanes Oct. 22 and 23 in Reading, Pa., for the Kutztown University Fall Baker Invitational.
