Far from home, many first-year students are unsure about how to navigate the challenges of New Orleans. With the Town Mom program organized by the Newcomb Alumnae Association, they don’t have to rely on the whims of an Internet search or advice from other students.
“I enjoy meeting the people that are just starting out, and hopefully help them have a good experience while they are here. I get a lot out of it too — I don't typically hang out with college freshmen, and they are delightful.”This year, Price was connected with two new students, each with their own reasons for building a relationship with a local alumna. Holly Hunt, from Arlington Heights, Ill., says that she was encouraged to participate because her own mother was “nervous about me being so far away.”
“I wanted to get connected in every way I could. I hope to get a relationship with someone connected to New Orleans that will help to make the city more my home.”Aidan Smith is external affairs officer for the Newcomb College Institute.
