For more than six years, Tulane New Wave readers have been receiving a morning email message with campus topics. That tradition continues, but the home page where all those news items rest has a new look and a host of new features for readers to sample.

Kathryn Hobgood, assistant director of web communications at Tulane, talks about the 2012 New Wave home page that is live and kicking, with material that changes daily, and often hourly.

Q: What’s this new navigation bar?
Readers will notice a new top navigation menu, so they can choose to browse through articles by topics such as campus life, athletics or stories about New Orleans.

Q: How has the daily news section changed?
The home page features the most recent news chronologically at the top left. It’s updated all day and includes stories from web pages across the university, as well as materials produced by the New Wave staff from the publications and public relations offices.

Q: What’s the “In Focus?”
Years of data collected about New Wave readership have shown that our readers love beautiful photography. In Focus is our daily photo feature, more than 100 pixels wider than the old design, allowing us to display larger photos similar to The Boston Globe's “Big Picture.”

But it also can be used for streaming video during major events, such as commencement or live chats with President Scott Cowen, as well as video works by New Wave staff members. It’s a flexible space showcasing life at Tulane and in New Orleans.

Q: What else is new on the home page?
Below the recent news, readers can browse through Editor's Picks — hot topics that change frequently — and spotlight content organized thematically. In between, a section shows calendar listings and a top event in the “Don’t Miss” box. We’ve also added “Did You Hear?” with a “big quote” plus links to articles about Tulane by external media.
