An enthusiastic crowd gathered Friday (Aug. 23) to dedicate the Stewards’ Cottage, the new building that will serve as home for the founders of A Studio in the Woods. This new addition will allow the artists’ retreat and preserve on the West Bank of Orleans Parish to expand programs and outreach.

“A Studio in the Woods is a treasure,” says Ama Rogan, managing director. “It’s always been able to offer so much to the people who come here, and I’m excited to be able to increase the number of people we can serve.”

The new building houses Lucianne and Joe Carmichael, founders and current stewards who donated their home, art studio and eight-acre site to Tulane University in 2004.

A Studio in the Woods aims to both preserve its endangered bottomland hardwood forest and create a place to nurture the creativity of students, visitors and artists. During the past 12 years, the facility has hosted more than 50 local, national and international competitively selected artists from across all disciplines.

In addition to artists, A Studio in the Woods hosts hundreds of people every year for everything from summer camps to employee retreats. Now that the original main house has no permanent occupant, the structure will be able to house additional resident-artists, students and scholars as well as hold more events.

The Carmichaels, Tulane, Entergy, Zemurray Foundation, Azby Fund, Louis A. & Lillian L. Glazer Family Foundation and numerous individual donors helped fund the Stewards’ Cottage, which was designed by architect John M. Anderson and constructed by Tulane Facilities Services. And A Studio in the Woods is already looking ahead to future expansion, which will include a writer’s cabin.
