August 20, 2012 5:41 AM

Whether you’re new to New Orleans as a college student or here taking on a new job, today’s Insider offers five must-have apps to help keep you organized and entertained.

In no particular order, check out these free apps that are available for both Apple and Android mobile devices.

#1 Facebook
It has become a staple in the world of networking by allowing you to keep in touch with friends, family in your hometown and, if used wisely, potential employers.

#2 Tulane
Check for Tulane University campus news, upcoming events and emergency notifications. There’s also a map that can help you navigate campus without looking like the new kid.

#3 Evernote
This app has everything! You can record lectures, type and save notes and create a filing system for everything in the palm of your hand. The best part is that all of your information automatically appears on other devices like your computer or tablet once Evernote is installed.

#4 Google
It’s kind of a no-brainer to install the Google app on your phone.  It’s like having an all-knowing genie in your pocket.

#5 New Orleans Guide Pal
There is no shortage of things to do in New Orleans. In fact, the problem may be sorting through long lists of live entertainment and local restaurants. Guide Pal navigates easily and provides tips on local restaurants, shopping, bars and nightlife.
