Internships can be drab or fab — like a position working at the U.S. Embassy in Athens, Greece — an internship held this summer by Krista Haldes, a Tulane senior majoring in political science.

Haldes assisted in setting up the Joint Operations Center run by the embassy during the 2011 Special Olympics World Summer Games. She is one of 91 students utilizing the internship program run by the Tulane Center for Public Service.

Monique Labat, internship program manager, says that students who participate in the program benefit from the support of the CPS staff during the internship and are allowed to register the internship for course credit. Students also participate in an internship seminar that includes group discussion, journal entries and a place to reflect on the experience.

“Reading their reflection pieces and seeing their minds unfold when they realize what they want to do with their lives is an amazing experience,” says Labat, who leads one of several internship seminars each semester.

She adds, “I’ve had students say that they would never take a job in the field they interned in, and others who come away with job offers.”

Jillian Poche, a junior majoring in psychology, wanted to apply her interest in working with under-privileged youth and her mentoring skills to her summer internship. She secured a public service internship with the Louisiana Green Corps, which provides job skills training to disadvantaged youth.

If you are clueless about where to start with finding an internship, Labat offers these suggestions:

●  Complete an online application form on the CPS website.

●  Start searching for an internship in the semester before you plan to work.

●  Choose an internship related to your major.

●  Take the internship job description to a CPS internship coordinator to make sure the job qualifies for academic credit.

Although the deadline for fall internships has passed, you may email Monique Labat regarding positions for the spring.
