After four and one-half years of planning, Dr. Delmar R. Caldwell, chair of the Tulane University Department of Ophthalmology, announces the opening of the Tulane Refractive Center this summer.

Caldwell says the center, run by the School of Medicine’s ophthalmology department and with its team of faculty members, is the first of its kind to open in Louisiana and features the latest technology for vision correction.

Equipment in the center includes the iLASIK (IntraLase) computerized laser vision correction system that allows ophthalmologists to make a 3-D map of a patient’s eye to deliver a customized, precise correction of vision problems such as farsightedness, nearsightedness and astigmatism, Caldwell says.

“We analyze a cornea and take precise information and plug it into this machine, which calculates and treats the eye,” says Caldwell, who also plans to use the equipment for teaching and research.

“Using the laser, I am able to do a ‘top-hat’ corneal transplant with almost no sutures,” Caldwell adds.

The laser can be used to “tweak” the eyes of patients who have had previous premium cataract surgery, allowing them excellent vision without wearing glasses, Caldwell says.

For eight years, Caldwell has been implanting multifocal lenses in the eyes of patients who are having cataracts removed. He has chaired the ophthalmology department since 1978, and his particular areas of expertise are refractive and corneal surgery.

Other features of the center include a full-service optical shop and a broad range of vision correction services including scleral lenses and contact lens fitting for difficult cases.

The Tulane Refractive Center is located at 1415 Tulane Ave. in downtown New Orleans. For more information or to schedule an appointment, call 504-988-8866.
