With summer winding down and the start of school getting closer, a contingent of Tulane student-athletes gathered to help the Communities In Schools organization prepare for the school year, unloading supplies at Success Preparatory Academy.

Green Wave student-athletes and staff members headed to the academy, 2011 Bienville St., on Sunday (July 23) to help CIS set up its “Champs Choice Store.” They arrived just in time to help the CIS staff members, who had unloaded nearly 20 tons of supplies the day before, by finishing up the heavy lifting of equipment that was donated by the ELCA Youth Gathering that took place in the city earlier in the week.

“We needed some strong arms and extra hands to help us unload this incredible donation,” said Sara Massey, CIS president. “It was natural to turn to the student-athletes of the Devlin S-AFE Center at Tulane for help. They gave us the physical and emotional boost we needed to get the project done quickly so that we could be ready when school leaders and CIS staff, all who are ‘champs’ for our children, come to choose anything they want to help their students.”

CIS works closely with conventions to help them recycle their leftover items into public schools in Greater New Orleans.

The Tulane group aided in unpacking, organizing and getting supplies ready so that area school leaders could select items at the “Champs Choice Store.” The supplies included free-standing basketball goals, couches, athletic equipment, wheelchairs, DVD players, classroom décor, bicycles, utility equipment and classroom supplies, such as notebooks, binders, markers and poster board.

In New Orleans, the CIS  affiliate has been active since 1996, serving more than 5,000 students across 12 public schools, both charter and Recovery School District-operated institutions.
