The two are among 150 youths participating in Girls First, a weeklong summer sports camp for girls 6 to 16 that takes place each June on the Tulane uptown campus. The free residential camp provides sports and movement opportunities to underserved girls. Activities include instruction in swimming and dance, team sports, canoeing, cycling, bowling and tennis.
Jamilah Peters-Muhammed (aka Mama Jamilah) leads a group of 13- and 14-year-olds in African dance. The girls are camp counselors-in-training.
