When teams are first formed, expectations for accomplishment are usually tempered due, simply, to the nascent status of the squad.

Such was the case with the newly formed Tulane table tennis team, which was organized in October 2012. In spite of modest expectations, the team performed better than anyone anticipated, making it to the national tournament this past spring semester.

The team’s fast success shocked junior Connor Dolan, the team’s manager and cofounder, who says Tulane is the first team in the history of the National Collegiate Table Tennis Association to make it to the championship tournament in its first year.

“When we first started the team I just saw it as a fun opportunity to get people to play competitively,” Dolan says. “Nationals was never in the picture for me.”

The team’s success is due in part to the strength of play of two players, Dian Li and Kangkang Huang.

After the national tournament, Li is ranked 51st in the nation in the men’s rankings and Huang is ranked eighth in the women’s rankings and 31st in the coed rankings.

Dolan says he hopes to parlay the squad’s success into more financial support from the university for better tables and funds to offset the cost of travel to regional and national tournaments.
