I Take Your Hand in Mine! — a play by Carol Rocamora of the New York University Tisch School of the Arts — is based on the love letters between writer Anton Chekhov and actress Olga Knipper.
Musical compositions for the production are by Tulane music professor Faina Lushtak.
Moscow Nights will take the play to the 15th Annual International Chekhov Theater Festival, Melikhovskaya Vesna, in Moscow later in May. The premier performance will be at Chekhov’s estate in Melikhovo where he wrote his famous play The Seagull.
“This is an incredible opportunity for our small organization, and I can’t imagine that we would not accept the invitation, despite world politics,” says director Natasha O. Ramer, a Russian immigrant who lives in New Orleans.
“We performed this play in 2006, 2008 and 2009 in both Jefferson Parish and New Orleans. In 2011, we performed on Valentine’s Day at the invitation of the Russian Cultural Center of the Russian Federation Embassy in Washington, D.C. To be able to perform it for Russian audiences in Chekhov’s native country is a great honor!”
A theater director, actress and singer, Ramer, through Moscow Nights, has directed numerous productions including Russian Winter Festivals, Russian theatre and educational events.
The play will be performed in English, with Russian subtitles, by New Orleans actors Scott M. Jefferson and Diana E. Shortes.
