The Hope Gardens community service project in the Lower Ninth Ward became a scholarship opportunity for junior Ophir Haberer, one of the student leaders of the volunteer effort. Tulane students, working with the community-driven organization Sankofa Community Development Corp., have been working alongside children in the neighborhood to build sustainable gardens that will promote healthy lifestyles.
Haberer, who received the UGL Services Community Service Scholarship, which recognizes current and future leaders involved in civic engagement, gives a tour of the developing project to officials from UGL Services, the Tulane custodial services contractor, on Thursday (April 19).
