U.S. surgeon general Dr. Regina Benjamin was among Tulane alumni receiving awards from the Tulane Alumni Association at the annual awards celebration on Sunday (April 15) at the Audubon Tea Room in New Orleans.
Distinguished alumna award winner Dr. Regina Benjamin, left, who received a master's degree in business in 1991 from Tulane, celebrates with Lisa M. Laws, a 2006 grad, who received the Young Alumna Volunteer Award. In her role in the Obama administration, Benjamin provides the public with scientific information to improve health and oversees 6,500 uniformed public health officers serving around the world. Laws is a structural engineer at URS who recently won the URS Award of Excellence for her outstanding community service.
Claire Picheloup Gisclair, left, congratulates volunteer award winner Dr. Julius Levy, right. A retired surgeon who received his undergraduate degree in 1954 and his medical degree in 1957, Levy is a clinical professor of surgery and adjunct professor of cell and molecular biology at Tulane. He also is a captain in the reserve division of the New Orleans Police Department and command physician for the National Disaster Medical System.
Helen L. Schneidau, a 1967 Newcomb College alumna, left, who also received a volunteer award, addresses the crowd while Michelle Rinehart, president of the Tulane Alumni Association board, looks on. A marine insurance broker and risk manager, Schneidau has served on the Newcomb Alumnae Association Board of Directors and as a Newcomb Town Mom. With the Newcomb Archives, she established a volunteer program to collect oral histories and she received the Newcomb Award for Service and Loyalty in 2001.
