Roger Dunaway has a busy weekend ahead, working with 600 media professionals — writers, photographers, broadcasters and camera crews — in New Orleans to cover the 2013 Women’s Final Four basketball championship. His colleague, Vince Granito, will be overseeing game management, everything from locker and training rooms to shot clock operations.

It’s all part of being a good host, according to Dunaway and Granito, who both work in the Tulane athletics department. Tulane is the host institution for the Final Four events, being held Friday (April 5) through Tuesday (April 9).

Working behind the scenes to make plans run smoothly is a team of professionals from Tulane who knows the Final Four requirements well. They handled similar roles last year at this time for the Men’s Final Four in New Orleans.

When the NCAA brings a major national tournament to town, it designates an educational institution as the host. Granito says Tulane is happy to be involved “in support of the city of New Orleans.” More than 20,000 fans, including coaches of women’s basketball here for a convention, are expected to give the city an economic boost.

The associate athletics director for internal operations at Tulane, Granito is serving as one of three co-directors on the tournament’s management team, along with representatives from the Allstate Sugar Bowl and the Greater New Orleans Sports Foundation.

“Our main role is game management, everything at the New Orleans Arena,” Granito says. "We know what it takes to do it right.”

Dunaway, assistant athletics director at Tulane for athletics communications, will be overseeing a team of 40 media volunteers along with Tulane colleague Brian Miller and the Sugar Bowl’s John Sudsbury.

“We have developed a very good blueprint on assembling and running a media services staff during this type of high-profile event,” he says. “It’s another shining example of how different agencies in the city come together to put on a first-class event.”
