On Monday, April 21, Tulane University faculty and staff members will support the Cowen Service Challenge by joining Tulane President Scott Cowen for the fourth annual Day of Service.

“This year, we will again support City Park, and work with the United Saints organization, Second Harvest, Youth Rebuilding New Orleans and Arc of Greater New Orleans as we celebrate the university’s legacy of supporting healthy and vibrant communities through direct community service,” says Anne P. Baños, chief of staff and vice president.

Activities will include sorting food and Mardi Gras beads, clearing vacant lots, gardening, mulching, painting, art installation, carpentry and construction.

“As Tulanians, we consistently demonstrate our active citizenship and commitment to our community’s prosperity through our work at the university, and we hope that faculty and staff members will take part in this meaningful community service day,” Baños says.

In addition, the Tulane National Primate Research Center will host a carnival for the clients of STARC, both adults and children. For more information about that event, contact Stacey Schwankhart.

“Since Hurricane Katrina, under Dr. Cowen’s leadership, the entire Tulane community — not just students — has embraced service as part of the university’s mission,” says Katie Houck, assistant director for outreach and leadership development in the Tulane Center for Public Service. “This service day is one example of how the university and its faculty and staff put this mission into action.

“As we have seen during the Cowen Service Challenge, our faculty and staff contribute thousands of hours of community service individually. This event allows us to come together and serve, not as individuals, but as a university community.”

The deadline to register to participate in the Day of Service is April 4. Round-trip transportation, snacks and beverages at the various locations, and a closing lunch at Greer Field at Turchin Stadium will be provided for participants.
