You may not know Kathy Bourgeois, but you probably know her voice. When you dial the information line for Tulane University, it is her voice you hear. On Tuesday (Feb. 19), Bourgeois was one of 10 outstanding Tulane employees who received Staff Excellence Awards.
The honored staff members dined with President Scott Cowen and his wife, Marjorie Cowen, at their home at No. 2 Audubon Place. Recipients of the annual Staff Excellence Awards received a one-time $1,000 cash prize.
In 2001, Cowen introduced the recognition program for staff members and the successful program is part of the university’s strategic plan. Each year a committee representing a cross section of the university community selects the winners from nominations by their colleagues.
The program recognizes up to 10 staff members whose commitment has advanced the mission of Tulane through increased productivity, cost savings, humanitarianism or enhanced objectives.
Bourgeois is one employee who was nominated in all four categories. Bourgeois, a manager of uptown telecommunications in technology services, is on call 24 hours a day. She fixes technical issues before they become a problem and works extra hours, for example, implementing the new voicemail system. She was recognized for being a person who performs a vital university function behind the scenes.
The other winners are: Tammy Bordes, laboratory technical specialist, Tulane Cancer Center; Glenda Folse, privacy and contracting officer, general counsel’s office; Valerie McGinley Marshall, departmental development officer II, Stone Center for Latin American Studies; Oscar Sill, security administrator, technology services; David Lee, superintendent of construction, facilities services, uptown; Michael Pizzolatto, program manager, Tulane Center for Public Service; Patricia Parrie, executive secretary, collaborative research division, Tulane National Primate Research Center; Tim Schuler, laboratory supervisor, physics; and Erica Woodley, director of residential education, housing and residence life.
“It has been my experience that the extraordinary Tulane employee is the rule rather than the exception,” said Scott Cowen, Tulane president.
Anne Baños, chief of staff and vice president, says what makes this award special is it is given by peers to peers — staff recognizing the excellence of their fellow staff members. “We’re committed to recognizing staff through this program and other ones. Staff are the heart and soul of the institution. We’d be nowhere without the dedicated people who are here every day to support the faculty and students.”
The Staff Excellence Award is open to all staff employees who are employed 50 percent or more with benefits and have successfully completed their six-month evaluation period. The program excludes vice presidents and university officers from participating.
