On Friday (Feb. 14) the Carnival Kickoff, hosted by theWell
, will take place during Fridays at the Quad with the goal of educating Tulane University students on how to have a safe and enjoyable Mardi Gras.
“This event started in the Spring of 2011 and has grown considerably since that year,” says Mark Knapp health educator at theWell. “The partnership between theWell, TUCP, Housing and Residence Life, and Uptown Campus Dining by Sodexo has allowed for a much larger 2014 event.”
Knapp says the event is aimed at teaching first-year students not to underestimate the importance of having a plan.
Students who attend will receive a fanny pack stuffed with a first aid kit and a preparation checklist.
The kickoff begins with a second line parade at 3:30 p.m. at McAlister Place and Freret Street. Lineup begins at 3 p.m. The official event runs from 4 p.m. until 6 p.m. on the Lavin-Bernick Center Quad.
In addition to free food and king cake, music will be provided by the Stooges Brass Band. And there will be prizes for the three students with the best costumes.
