On Saturday (Jan. 26), students from Dillard, Loyola, Tulane and Xavier universities will participate in a day of service to honor the late Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. The day of service is the culminating event in the MLK Week for Peace, a week of activities that bring students together to learn about and commemorate the work of King.  The theme of this year’s Week for Peace is “Keep Calm and D.R.E.A.M.”

“The hosting universities hope that students embrace this theme throughout the day of service by developing coalitions, reigniting passion, educating the masses, effecting change and making it happen,” says Sydney Licht of the Tulane class of 2015, who is public relations chair for this year's event.

The volunteers will be participating in a host of interactive service activities throughout the New Orleans area. Students will be beautifying the sculpture gardens at the New Orleans Museum of Art, recycling and sorting Mardi Gras beads at Arc of Greater New Orleans, organizing libraries at the Community Book Center and mulching a trail in City Park, along with many other projects.

“MLK Day of Service is an example of the universities’ year-round commitment to our community,” says Virginia Morgan, a junior at Tulane who is student chair of the MLK Day of Service. “All of our students are proud to call New Orleans home, and this event is a great opportunity for these students to support our community partners.”

All participating volunteers will arrive on the Tulane uptown campus for registration in McAlister Auditorium at 8 a.m. on Saturday. From there, they will be bused to the various project sites. A celebration of service will occur on Loyola’s campus at 1 p.m. to conclude the day’s activities.  Students must register online to participate in the day of service.
