Tulane University senior Cara Clatanoff has helped open a rural Peruvian community to the world. Last summer, Clatanoff spent seven weeks helping establish a homestay program in Unión Chahuay, a community located about 38 miles south of Cusco, Peru.
“As Tulane students, we are so fortunate to have such wonderful experiences available to us,” says Clatanoff. She was one of three students who are awarded the Henkin travel scholarship every year.
Jill Glazer, a 1985 Newcomb College alumna, and her husband, Avie Glazer, started the Henkin travel fund in memory of her parents, who traveled extensively and instilled that love of travel in their children. Jill and Avie Glazer are parents of a 2013 Tulane graduate and a current junior.
“The award is something that would have been meaningful to my parents,” says Glazer, a member of the Board of Tulane. “We are giving students the opportunity to do something they wouldn’t have been able to do otherwise, something that may change their life forever.”
Clatanoff, working for a Peruvian non-governmental organization called Sierra Productiva, wrote a marketing and operations plan for the tourism program, Sierra Productiva Sustainable Journeys, which detailed ways to attract visitors and prepare the community for them.
The 80 families who live in Unión Chahuay are dedicated to sustainable farming, says Clatanoff, and the homestay allows travelers to learn about their daily life, language and culture. The visits give the community extra income and promote cross-cultural understanding.
Private support allows Tulane to offer students extraordinary experiences, says James MacLaren, dean of Newcomb-Tulane College.
“I believe one of the strengths of a Tulane education is the opportunities provided for students to learn and grow from experiences outside of the classroom, and these only are possible through the generosity of donors,” MacLaren says.
