Tanya Chen


A native Houstonian, Tanya Chen is majoring in Biomedical Engineering and Physics at Tulane University. She excels academically as a student in the Honors College and has been on the dean’s list. Tanya is also actively involved in scientific research. Her research interests include microvasculature blood flow mechanics and biomedical microdevices. She is a member of Dr. Shevkoplyas’ microfluidics lab and research group, analyzing the rheological properties and biomechanics of red blood cells with novel microfluidic devices for point-of-care diagnostics and clinical applications.

Tanya founded and serves as project coordinator of the Sounds of Harmony community service initiative, a pilot project that will be launched in Fall 2011 with support from the Center for Public Service. Sounds of Harmony seeks to foster a passion for music by providing New Orleans youth with accessible violin education. Tanya is fluent in Spanish and Mandarin Chinese. She volunteers in Oaxaca with Amigos de las Américas, participating in environmental sustainability and nutritional awareness projects.

In her free time, she enjoys playing the violin and viola, traveling, practicing vinyasa yoga, learning new languages, and pursuing an interest in computer science. She advocates healthy living and nutritional awareness, and was the first place winner of the 2011 Healthy Steps six-week challenge sponsored by the Center for Wellness and Health Promotion. Tanya is a member of the American Physical Society, Phi Eta Sigma Honor Society, Alpha Lambda Delta Honor Society, and Chi Alpha Christian Fellowship.
