Alexandra Yarost is from West Bloomfield, Michigan, a township in the Metro Detroit area. She is a double major in Economics and Environmental Studies with a possible minor in French. She is passionate about the concept of sustainable business-cementing, not only a compromise between Wall Street and Mother Nature but also a mutually beneficial relationship. Her research project in the Newcomb Scholars program will explore the usage of carbon offset programs as a form of humanitarian aid between developed and developing nations. Her belief is if wealthy nations pay developing countries for offsets, money can thus be inserted into a developing country's economy, promoting both sustainable development and increased GDP in poor countries. (An example would be the U.N. REDD program). Alexandra received Third Place in the Fall 2009 Reading Project Essay Contest.
