Sophielab is a Macintosh-oriented multimedia production lab holding signficant video and audio recording and editing equipment and software. Recording devices may be checked-out by approved members of the Sophielab community.
As of Spring 2011, Sophielab is accessible primarily to Media Lab interns and students enrolled in the Feminist Documentation and New Media course. Computers are available on a first come, first serve basis to other members of the Tulane community, including faculty, staff, students, alums and Newcomb College Institute community partners. affiliated with Newcomb College Institute. Only Newcomb Institute staff, active faculty associates, students enrolled for Fall 2010 in COMM 365 Feminist Documentation and New Media. Others may be approved to use the equipment on a case by case basis. Please contact Jaelle Scheuerman (firstname.lastname@example.org) if you are interested in checking out a video camera kit.
There are few rules at Sophielab, and they are all focused on function.
Production lab rules
No software piracy or illegal filesharing. Tidy up your desktop and work area when you leave, and secure all personal files. Abandoned materials (including files) may be discarded at any time. Sophielab is not responsible for your personal files. The Sophielab facilitator reserves the right to institute and enforce additional guidelines should they become necessary.
Equipment rules and check-out rules
In order to work successfully as part of the Sophielab community, you must be respectful of the fact that many people share use of our computers, recording devices, software, and many accessories.
DO NOT REMOVE (OR RETURN) MATERIALS AND EQUIPMENT FROM THE LAB WITHOUT GOING THROUGH PROPER CHECKOUT (OR CHECK-IN) PROCEDURES.
Return equipment on time. You are expected to act responsibly when using Sophielab equipment. Take care not to expose recording equipment to climate extremes, including leaving it in a hot car trunk.
Note: During Spring 2011, please plan to check out and return equipment between the Sophielab open hours or at the meetings (class/screening-lab) of COMM 365 on Tuesday evenings.
Should a piece of equipment break or malfunction, it is likely from typical wear-and-tear. Please inform a Sophielab staff member immediately or upon check-in of equipment if you know or suspect that it may need to be repaired or replaced. Typical wear and tear with occasional accidental damage is to be expected, and is part of our planning. Sophielab will assess damage to equipment resulting from obvious negligence and bill the responsible party accordingly.
Food and drink
Sophielab prohibits open containers at workstations (closed-top beverage containers of the types acceptable at Howard-Tilton Library are fine). Dry snacks are fine within reason, but please do not eat sloppy meals at workstations or leave fingerprints on the keyboards. Offenders will be required to clean up their messes, and risk losing production lab access.
