ORGANIZTION AND ARRANGEMENT:

The material has been arranged in two storage boxes that correspond to the boxes in which the material was originally received. For the most part, the original subject headings have been maintained. All attempts have been made to preserve the original order. All papers have been unfolded and laid flat, and some metal fasteners have been removed.

BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE:

Mindy Milam served as President of the Jefferson Parish Chapter of the National Organization for Women during the later half of the 1970s. The majority of Mindy’s women’s rights activism took place in the greater New Orleans area. There, she helped to change Parish laws and procedures regarding rape and violence against women. She was also active at the NOW state and national level. She was a strong advocate of the ERA, and served as a liaison for Jefferson Parish to the National Conference on Women in 1977 and the NOW National Conference in 1978.

SCOPE AND CONTENT:

This collection contains materials relating to Mindy Milam’s presidency of the Jefferson Parish Chapter of the National Organization for Women during the years of1976 and 1979. The bulk of this collection consists of personal correspondences, newspaper clippings, and organizational documents from Mindy Milam’s NOW involvements. Also included in this collection are publications from the national and state chapters of NOW. This collection would be of particular interest to those researching the activities of NOW in the greater New Orleans area during the late 1970s.
