Laura Bass came to Tulane in 2000 with a Ph.D. from Princeton University and an M.A. from the University of Virginia. She is a specialist in the literature and art of baroque Spain and has interests in material culture, urbanism, and poetics in the early modern Hispanic world. Her book The Drama of the Portrait: Theater and Visual Culture in Early Modern Spain (Penn State University Press, 2008) received the 2010 Eleanor Tufts Book Award sponsored by the American Society for Hispanic Art Historical Studies. Current projects include a study of paintings of baroque Madrid and a book on Luso-Castilian poetic rivalries and their reverberations in viceregal Peru.
She is book review editor for Calíope: The Journal of the Society for Renaissance and Baroque Hispanic Poetry and serves on the executive committee of the MLA Division on Sixteenth- and Seventeenth-Century Spanish Drama. In 2007, she won the Tulane President’s Award for Graduate Teaching.
