The Department of Spanish and Portuguese of Tulane University has a long and distinguished history of researching and teaching the languages, literatures, and cultures of the Iberian Peninsula, Latin America, and Lusophone Africa. Our department's programs range from the most elementary instruction in these two languages, through advanced seminars in literature, culture, and linguistics for undergraduate majors and minors and for graduate students pursuing Ph.D. degrees.
Our department consists of fourteen regular faculty members and five full-time lecturers who pursue a wide range of disciplinary, theoretical, regional, period, and genre specializations. Our faculty has worked closely with interdisciplinary programs such as Latin American Studies, African and African and Diaspora Studies, Asian Studies, Gender and Sexuality Studies , and Medieval and Early Modern Studies,
