Current Courses

POLT 270  Political Thought in the West

This course will introduce students to the major outlines of the history of Western political thought and to a few of the major works of Western political thinking.

POLT 478  Modern Political Theory

This course will focus upon the political thought of three early Modern theorists (Niccolò Machiavelli, Thomas Hobbes and John Locke) and one late Modern theorist (Michael Oakeshott).  Each of these theorists was intensely interested in the nature and purpose of political theory in political education (education for rulers and education for citizens or subjects).

 

Research Interests

Political Philosophy and the History of Political Thought since the Renaissance, Philosophy of History, Contract Theories since Ancient Greece, the History of Political Science and Political Economy as university disciplines since the Reformation, Contemporary Political Thought, Political Education and Literature and Politics.
