As Dean of the School of Liberal Arts, it is my pleasure to welcome you to our newly revised newsletter.  Through this electronic mailing, we hope that you will get a sense of the vitality that permeates the school.  Without question, we embody what is best in the mission of the liberal arts.  Our students have a strong grounding in the arts, humanities, and social sciences. By learning to write, communicate and analyze, they develop skills in research and inquiry that prepare them for future challenges and opportunities.  Our faculty members are leaders in their respective fields and take that knowledge and enthusiasm into the classroom.

But while these qualities can be found at many fine universities, we believe the liberal arts experience at Tulane is based on a unique vision, created by our location, approach and mission. Set in one of the most remarkable cities in the world, we have made New Orleans our canvas on which to explore its amazing architecture, history, and culture, as well as to serve as a gateway to Latin America.  Through our departments, programs, and centers, our students and faculty cross academic boundaries to engage in intellectual pursuits that are limitless.  In our commitment to the city and the world, we apply our teaching and research to improving the lives of those both in New Orleans and across the globe.   As I am sure you will agree as you read about the activities of our faculty, students, staff, and alumni, the School of Liberal Arts at Tulane is a remarkable academic community.  Defined by its location, approach and mission, it is founded on a vision that engages, inspires, and empowers.
