Nghana Lewis holds a joint position in English and African & African Diaspora Studies at Tulane. Her areas of expertise include 19th and 20th Century American Literature; African American Expressive Culture, broadly conceived; Law and Education; and Critical Race Theory. She is the Founder and Executive Director of the ESSENCE Program, a 501c3 not-for-profit organization that develops K-12 curriculum centered on local culture. Nghana's research focuses on literary, cultural, and educational policy studies. She is currently completing a study of parents' knowledge of, and participation in, public school governance in post-Katrina New Orleans. She is also designing a hip hop literacy model for use in HIV/AIDS prevention & intervention education.
