Founded in 2001, with a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Deep South Regional Humanities Center was created to support, document and disseminate the history and culture of the region encompassing Alabama, Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi and Tennessee. In 2005, Katrina forced the cancellation of the Center’s operation, although its resources continue to support conferences and summer fellowships. For information on current funding opportunities from the Center see the Funding page.
As outlined in the Strategic Plan, the School of Liberal Arts is now committed to reviving the Center. This year, a newly created committee is charged with developing a plan for the Center that will transform it into a platform for interdisciplinary work on the region’s history, identity, and culture. As the work of the committee continues, we will provide updates at this site.
