The major consists of ten (10) courses with a minimum of thirty (30) credits.
Three core methods courses are required of all majors:
• Close textual analysis (COMM 3150 or 3250 or 3350)
• Identity and relationship analysis (COMM 3140 or COMM 3240)
• Media or technology analysis (COMM 3160 or COMM 3260)
As of Fall 2012, Communication Studies (COMM 1000) needs to be completed before taking any of the core courses. It is required for all majors to complete three of the seven core courses, preferably by the end of junior year. Students who have an overall GPA of less than 2.50 when they declare the major must complete a 1000 or 2000 level course with a grade of C- or better before they will be allowed to enroll in a core course.
Of the six electives, three (3) must be completed at the 3000 level or above and two (2) must be completed at the 4000 level or above. One of the two classes at the 4000 level or above should be a capstone course*.
*Students with a second major may choose which department he or she completes their capstone in.
Students wishing to graduate with honors in communication must take either the graduate seminar (COMM 621 or 622) or another 400-level honors course, and complete an honors project/thesis.
Students must register for the honors thesis with the Honors Program, which is located in Hebert Hall.
