Training for Intervention Procedures (TIPS)

Tulane University is committed to using evidence-based programs to prevent harm from alcohol among our students and in our community. The Division of Student Affairs is pleased to offer the "Training for Intervention Procedures" (TIPS) TIPS for the University program. TIPS for the University is recognized by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), and is listed on SAMHSA's National Registry of Evidence-based Programs and Practices (NREPP).

Hosting social events with alcohol is a privilege granted to student organizations by Tulane University. The Alcohol Policy requires student organizations that wish to host events with alcohol to have Sober Event Monitors in place during their event. TIPS for the University helps students make sound choices when faced with difficult decisions about alcohol use. The training is an interactive, discussion-based program facilitated by a certified TIPS trainer.

sober event monitor Eligibility

TIPS for the University does not qualify any student/faculty or staff to serve drinks or check state issued IDs during a Tulane related event. You are eligible to serve as a Sober Event Monitor if all of the following conditions are met:

  • You are 21 or over
  • You are TIPS certified by Tulane University
  •  You are not currently in substance abuse treatment or on disciplinary probation with the Office of Student Conduct

In addition, in order to become TIPS certified you must pass an exam that will be administered during the training. It may take up to 7 business days to process these exams and issue a certification. Therefore, we recommend scheduling your TIPS class well in advance of your event to allow ample time for this processing and certification to take place.
