Public Service Internship Program - Frequently Asked Questions

What are the required components of the internship program?

Students complete 60 - 70 hours of service at their site (depending on the major), attend a weekly seminar class, and create a final project that adds benefit to the community partner organization.

What if my GPA is not quite 3.0? Can I still participate?

You can still apply to the program as long as your GPA is not below a 2.7. Students with GPAs in this range must submit a GPA waiver form that includes signature and letter of support from a faculty member. Contact an Internship Coordinator for more information.

Which majors require 70 hours of service within the internship?

Students participating in internships through Cell and Molecular Biology, Neuroscience, Psychology, and STEM need to complete at least 70 hours of service.

How many hours a week do I need to work at the internship site?

The total minimum number of hours per semester depending on your major is 60 or 70. There is no set number of weekly hours. However, most students average between 5-7 hours of work per week at their internship sites. You should discuss your weekly schedule with your supervisor, keeping in mind the goal of completing a minimum of 60-70 hours by the end of the semester.

How do I know if my internship can be considered public service?

Most community organizations, including schools, non-profits, hospitals, governmental agencies, and neighborhood associations qualify as public service community partners. In addition, some for-profit businesses are considered if their work provides a service for the public good that makes a significant impact in the community. Another important criterion is that your internship benefit members of the non-Tulane community. Consult our online database of registered community partners and contact an Internship Coordinator if you are having doubts. New partnerships are established on a routine basis so be sure to let us know if you are pursuing an internship with an organization that is not on our list.

What is an Internship Contribution?

The Internship Contribution is aimed at benefitting the partner organization with which students are interning by leaving a tangible trace of their work, even if they contribute to a long-term undertaking that is not completed by the time their internship ends. Internship Contributions can take on many different forms. It is up to the Site Supervisor and the intern to discuss and identify a need that can be addressed through the creation of a tangible product. In the past, interns have developed resource directories, teaching manuals, press packages, databases, newspaper articles, after-school programming and outreach brochures. It could even be a report on the work that interns accomplish during their internship. This provides a learning experience for the intern, as well as providing their partner site with something of value. In addition to creating this tangible product, students are also responsible for presenting this product to their seminar class. What happens in the internship seminar?

Internship seminars provide an academic context to students' community work. Students will read academic articles and participate in class discussion. They will also submit reflections that incorporate information from assigned readings, internship experiences, and personal accounts. The internship seminar also provides a forum for support and problem-solving as students move through their internship experiences.

How do I sign up for the credit?

By the beginning of the semester of your internship, your department will be notified of your participation in our program. It is your responsibility to ensure that proper credit (XXXX-4560/4570) has been added to your registration.

How much credit do I receive?

Depending on your department, you can receive up to 3 hours of credit at the 4000-level. Check with a CPS Internship Coordinator for specific departmental criteria.

How do I sign up for the seminar?

After your internship placement is finalized, a CPS Internship Coordinator will give you departmental permission, and you will then be able to register for your internship seminar through Gibson.

How is the internship graded?

The grade you receive from your internship is a combination of the work performed at your site and your performance in the internship seminar. The internship portion of your grade is determined through supervisor evaluations and submission of time logs. The seminar portion is determined through class attendance, reflection essay grades, and participation.

I have a very busy semester, I'm already taking 18 hours, but I want to try to squeeze in an internship, can you help me?

If you are already taking 18 hours, it is not recommended that you also attempt an internship. We want our students to succeed and maintain their commitment to their internship site, and this may not be possible under such a workload. It is recommended that you either drop another class or wait a semester to undertake an internship.

What is the deadline for turning in applications?

Specific deadlines for applications and required paperwork change every semester. Applications need to be submitted a full semester in advance of your internship. Check our website for up-to-date deadlines: http://tulane.edu/cps/students/internships/program-deadlines.cfm

Can I earn credit for a summer internship outside New Orleans?

Yes, students enroll in an online seminar during the summer in which they are performing the internship. If the internship position is paid, the student must complete the first 60-70 hours unpaid in order to receive public service credit. An attestation letter from the site supervisor must be provided.

Can I retroactively satisfy the public service graduation requirement for an internship that was not pre-approved by the Center for Public Service?

No; however, students can petition to have an independent study or honors thesis count towards their second tier graduation requirement. Contact an Internship Coordinator for more details.

Can I receive credit towards the public service graduation requirement for a service internship that I completed while studying abroad?

I want to do an internship at a hospital and shadow a doctor. Can I receive public service credit for this experience?

Students may receive public service credit provided the internship meets two criteria: 1) The activity qualifies as public service (public service is the primary goal of the internship) 2) The activity directly relates to the field of health and/or medicine If an internship does not meet both of these criteria then it will not qualify for academic and public service credit. To be certain you may wish to discuss an internship idea with an Internship Coordinator to ensure it meets both criteria.

Can my internship fulfill my department's capstone requirement?

At this time, only Psychology and Public Health award capstone credit for the internship experience. To be eligible students must be at least second-semester juniors completing an internship in the fall or spring semester.

Is there anything I need to do differently for an internship working in a school or hospital?

Yes, hospitals have various health and immunization requirements including drug tests and both hospitals and schools require criminal background checks. The specific site will notify you of your requirements and if they are handled internally or through CPS.
