Description of Organization:
The Louisiana Campaign for Tobacco-Free Living (TFL) is a statewide tobacco control program funded by a state excise tax on tobacco passed in 2002. TFL envisions a healthier Louisiana through 100% tobacco-free living.
Our mission is to implement and evaluate comprehensive tobacco control initiatives that prevent and reduce tobacco use and exposure to secondhand smoke. Consistent with the best practices in tobacco control recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and corresponding with most Tobacco Control Programs throughout the U.S., the TFL campaign goals include:
? To eliminate exposure to secondhand smoke
? To prevent initiation of tobacco use among youth
? To promote tobacco cessation among youth and adults
? To identify and eliminate tobacco-related disparities
? To facilitate effective coordination of all tobacco control and prevention initiatives throughout the state of Louisiana
The campaign divides the State of Louisiana into nine areas that are each represented by a Regional Manager. Region 1 encompasses Jefferson, Orleans, Plaquemines, and St. Bernard Parishes.
The Region 1 Office of the Louisiana Campaign for Tobacco-Free Living (TFL) is currently seeking Communications Research Assistants to assist with policy development, data collection, and entry, in one or more of TFL?s three Scope of Work (SoW) areas:
? Tobacco Prevention & Control Advocacy and Point of Sales Strategies (P.O.S.S.) with Youth (11-17)
? Supporting Advocacy Education to Protect Employees from Secondhand Smoke
? Tobacco Prevention & Control Advocacy with Young Adults (18-24)
Selected assistants will work from campus under the supervision of the TFL Region 1 Manager.
Campaign Best Practice Models Research Assistant
Duties: Assess and summarize nationwide best practices of political, cause, and tobacco-free campaigns. This work includes but is not limited to the identification and reporting of common elements of these campaigns including:
? Canvassing
? Events
? Fundraising strategies
? Mail outs
? Media
? Printing Services
? Yard Signs
? Political Action Organizing
o Letters to editors and policymakers
Deliverables:
? Database of retrieved elements of successful campaign models
? PowerPoint presentation
? Presentation of work outcomes to Louisiana Campaign for Tobacco-Free Living (TFL) Leadership, the Greater New Orleans Cancer & Tobacco Control Coalition (GNOCTCC), and the Regional Tobacco Sub-Committee.
Desired Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
? Proven ability to function independently and collaborate on a team
? Strong attention to detail and well organized
? Ability to carry out several tasks at once
Minimum Qualifications:
? Excellent written and oral communication skills
? Advanced computer skills including Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
? Applicants with interest in tobacco control efforts preferred
Commitment:
? Spring 2013 Academic Semester
? Hours are flexible
? The Region 1 Manager will work with each selected candidate to establish a schedule that aligns with TFL?s needs, academic guidelines, and the assistant?s availability
