Final Product Special Instructions:Service learners and volunteers work weekly as one-on-one as Academic Tutors/Reading Buddies with children. These sessions expose children to different types of literature, increase academic ahievement, and mentor. Students work with their buddies in FTC?s room which is equipped with materials and full time supervising staff.

Requirements

Background Checks is Required. It is required when working with children.
Other requirement: Willingness to make a commitment to attending weekly.
Evaluations/surveys will be requested by community partner to be completed by students.
An evaluation of the program and of the reading buddy's performance will be requested at the end of the semester.
Students are not allowed to take pictures or video.

Availability

Location and Travel

FTC is located at Benjamin Banneker which serves grades pre-K thru 8th and at Sophie B Wright which serves grades 4th thru 8th. Because of grade level requirements all k-3 level classes will be assigned to Banneker. However, the program requests that students required to work with 5th-10th grade students be assigned to each school as dictated by program needs.

Supervision and Risk

Check-in at the site: At Banneker students must check in with security guards and in FTC's Reading Room. At Sophie B Wright students must check in at FTC's reading room.
Students track their hours at site: Students will track their hours through our sign-in sheets.
Students will work unsupervised:Only if they come outside of the Reading Rooms' hours which are 9:00-3:00
