Keywords: ESL, Teaching Assistant
Descriptions: One to two Service-Learners will be placed in each ESL class to serve as Teaching-Assistants (TAs). Although the Classroom Teacher (CT) will be responsible for the daily lessons of our English language students, TAs will also be required to create and lead ESL learning activities. TAs will help Teachers maintain order in the classroom, as well as make class enjoyable for the learners. TAs will frequently be asked by Teachers to lead small-group tutoring. If a Teacher is absent, the TA will lead a class based on the HACS curriculum. At the beginning of the semester, several discussion questions provided by the HACS will help TAs and Teachers to determine expectations for their relationship in the classroom. In addition, the HACS will provide a 10-Week Plan for TAs to follow in order to increase their participation in the classroom and develop their ESL teaching abilities. Teachers will be responsible for determining the TA?s Service-Learning grade at the end of the semester based on the TA?s attendance and participation in the class. If a TA knows that they are going to be absent, they must e-mail or call the Classroom Instructor as soon as possible. Although Spanish and Portuguese speaking ability are not required for this position, basic knowledge of either of the two languages is definitely useful. However, TAs are highly discouraged from speaking Spanish or Portuguese in the classroom. Less than 10% of classroom time should take place in Spanish or Portuguese. TAs will also assist Classroom Teachers with administrative details such as taking attendance and carrying books to and from the ESL office. Finally, TAs must not forget to mark their attendance in the sign-in book.
