The Southern Food & Beverage Museum Kids Culinary Camp is a free half-day cooking camp for kids in 2nd through 5th grade. The camp aims to teach nutritional literacy and the importance of home cooking. Each day the campers learn a new recipe and prepare (and eat!) their own lunch, participate in fun physical activity, learn a bit about nutrition, and do a craft project where they write the recipe in their cookbook.
A primary goal of the Kids Culinary Camp is to expose children to the culinary field by bringing in guest speakers (chefs, people in the restaurant industry, farmers) to talk about different aspects of the local food systems and introduce potential career paths. The guest speaker coordinator will work on reaching out to the local food community to organize a guest speaker each week related to the week?s theme, for example: during vegetable week a local farmer will speak. The guest speaker coordinator will also work with the guest speakers to prepare the talk or activity they will be doing with the campers.
The camp is from 9am-noon each day. All Kids Culinary Camp interns will be involved in planning and helping to create the camp curriculum/activities as well as getting to spend the morning with the kids! Camp coordinators must enjoy and be comfortable working directly with elementary school kids.
