Volunteers come to one of our two school sites (Sophie B. Wright or Benjamin Banneker) to with students during the school day in a variety of ways. Volunteers serve as reading buddies, academic tutors, and classroom assistants. Mission statements

For The Children's primary focus is to improve the reading skills and academic performance of the students it works with. The program also strives to develop positive attitudes towards reading, literature and school. The program establishes relationships between individuals from New Orleans’ various socio-economic groups. Academic mentors are instructed to model pro-social behavior to act as an example for the children with whom they work. Finally, FTC strives to assist in raising the overall all performance rating of the schools the program serves.
